We are facing nowadays a kind of plural, markedly financial and transnational capitalism, whose features appear hybrid and heterogeneous. The United States and the European Union are no more imposing their schedule to the global market together with Japan, and new economies are earning their leadership at an ever increasing pace: the Chinese superpower and new emerging countries such as India and Brazil, as well as the resurging Russia, South Chorea, Turkey and South Africa. The question is whether such a multipolar economic universe will trigger a sustainable and socially responsible development and the evolution of political institutions, either the birth of new oligarchic élites and new nationalist drifts.
