Piazzas and Barracks. The dilemmas of Latin America from the twentieth century to today
It could become a leading light on the world geo-political stage, after more than three centuries of living under the dominion of the European powers, and having been considered a kind of 'backyard' by the United States. But Latin America continues to be a world where democracy is still an open challenge, the economy is balanced between backwardness and development, and deep social inequalities persist. While this state of affairs has been determined by many factors, the principal cause is that for such a long time the destiny of Latin-American countries (with just a few exceptions) has been played out between the barracks and the piazzas, between the subversive self-aggrandizement of the men in uniform and the demagogic populism of an extreme radical left or an extreme legalist right. In Valerio Castronovo's broad fresco, the analysis of events and legacy of the past are interwoven with questions about the future prospects and destiny of Latin America on the contemporary global and multi-polar stage.
