This third volume is divided into two parts. The first concentrates on dualism as the root of autonomous religions often closely connected with early Christianity (gnosticism, mandaeanism, manicheism) and with the organisations arisen within Christianity and soon expelled as "heresies".
The second part devotes its 6 chapters to the history of Islam, providing an exposition of the principal events through which Islam has spread through the world, and of the variety of different models of Islamic spirituality.
