Cesare Lombroso was one of the Italian intellectuals with the greatest influence on social policies around the world. At the end of the 19th century, Latin America in particular went crazy for his theories: it seemed that the magic formula to defuse racial or class conflicts had been found. Thus, in Brazil, Argentina and Cuba, a veritable cult developed for the category of the 'born criminal', for 'physiognomy', with a very strong influence on the repressive, prison systems as well as on racial relations in these countries. A cultural phenomenon of enormous relevance and so far forgotten, very important today to understand a lot about the origins of racism.
