The sex and love lives of the Greeks was not a one-dimensional affair. The consideration in which the institution of marriage was held in no way disbarred other forms of sexual and emotional satisfaction that were of a strongly social character and even, at times, vehicles for poetry. Europe's greatest scholars of the ancient world provide an intriguing and often surprising panorama of the ways in which erotic life was experienced in Greece.
