“One can turn to the past for two reasons: to unbury the dead and remove the grass and sand that cover yards and outlying areas; to travel again, for the purpose of self-congratulation or regret, the path that has led us to where we are today, highlighting the difficulties, the obstacles, the diversions, but also the successes. It seems clear that in contemporary history the second motivation prevails; but the first one too plays its part.”
