Richard W. Bulliet è uno dei più auorevoli studiosi americani di storia islamica. Insegna Storia alla Colubia University. Direttore del Middle East Institute e segretario esecutivo della Middle East Studies Association, ha curato la Columbia History of the 20th Century (1998) ed è autore di numerosi saggi, fra cui The Camel and the Wheel (New York 1990) e Islam. The View from the Edge (New York 1994).
